WNC COVID-19 Trends
-
Although the total percentage of people visiting WNC emergency departments for COVID-like illnesses has declined since a peak of 3.8% in early August, this percentage remains elevated as we begin heading into the flu season, which peaked last year in December.

On Thursday, NCDHHS reported 2,277 new COVID-19 cases, up from 1,495 the day before and the most new daily confirmed cases since July 30.
The average number of cases in WNC has increased from 79 to 89 cases per day over the past week. These data suggest the need for strong prevention efforts to head off a “twindemic” of flu and COVID-like illness this fall. Healthcare providers are encouraged to promote flu vaccinations and proven measures such as frequent hand washing, wearing face coverings in public, and practicing social distancing.

Over the River and Through the Woods

As we move into Phase 3 at 5 pm today, WNC is not yet out of the woods. It may become more difficult to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the coming months with more children returning to school, the easing of various restrictions, more time spent indoors, and upcoming holidays that coincide with cold and flu season.
The following prevention resources, though simple, include powerful strategies to help WNC families and communities make it safely through the woods this season.
