Asheville African American Health Symposium & Webinar Series

Date: September 18, 2020 12:00 PM

Do Black Lives Matter in Health Care?

MAHEC is proud to present the first national African American Health Symposium.  This symposium is designed to create awareness and education within the medical community regarding the current health of African Americans and the implications of centuries of medical oppression.  Racial disparities are unremitting and widespread within the African American population.  The causes are multifactorial – including historical oppression, implicit bias toward African American patients, community mistrust, and lack of diversity within the healthcare field, to name a few.  This webinar series and conference will include national leaders in medicine and in the African American community to bring the conversation to Asheville on how to address these disparities.

The in-person conference will take place in October, 2021.  In the meantime, we are hosting a monthly webinar series of national experts to start the discussion and build momentum around closing the gaps in African American healthcare disparities.  The webinar series will include topics such as Racism in Healthcare, Healthcare Reparations, Mental Health in the African American Community, the Role of the Black Church in Health Care, Historical Trauma and the Black Body, Systemic Oppression in the Healthcare System and its effects on Black Patients and Black Providers, and more.

The September 18 conversation will be led by three men, Cedrick Bright, MD; Ronny Bell, Ph.D; and Cornell Wright, MPA, who have been heavily involved in the discussion and have taken action in their roles around dismantling racism in the healthcare industry within the state of North Carolina and nationwide.

In an effort to ensure you have a voice in these conversations, we will send out a survey prior to each webinar where you can submit questions to pose to the speakers.  You can do this anonymously or include your name – your choice.
