Course Instructors:

Scott is a licensed clinical therapist and stress reduction educator with over fifteen years of meditation practice including retreats for mindfulness, meditation in medicine and research, insight meditation, and spiritual reflection. He has participated in professional training under the direction of Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn at UMASS Medical School's Center for Mindfulness and is trained in the Mindful Schools curriculum. He has taught mindfulness to physicians, patients in primary and specialty care clinics (e.g. family & internal medicine practices, cardiopulmonary, diabetes, substance abuse recovery), to individuals, to students, as well as to a variety of professional audiences. He teaches mindfulness at the Asheville Fire Department and the VA Medical Center's Veterans Integrative Pain Management Clinic, and has presented at MAHEC on multiple occasions. Before becoming a therapist, Scott worked in information technology for 25 years. He lives in Asheville with his wife, three daughters, and their rescued lab.

Dael Waxman, M.D. is the Vice Chair of the Academic Dept. of Family Medicine at Carolinas HealthCare System.  Additionally, he serves as Medical Director for CHS-Integrative Health and also Medical Director of Patient-Centered Programming at Carolinas Medical Center-Mercy.

He is a graduate of the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine, did his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Arizona and completed a Family Systems Medicine Fellowship at the University of Rochester.  In addition to his medical background, he has received training in and has been integrating family therapy, clinical hypnosis and other modalities of mind/body medicine into teaching and practice for over 20 years.  An Associate Professor of Family Medicine at UNC Chapel Hill, he has taught regionally, nationally and internationally on: family influences on health, physician-patient communication, collaboration between mental health and primary care, physician wellness, and mindfulness in medicine.  Dr. Waxman was named a Charlotte Top Doctor for Family Medicine in 2012 and 2013.  Dael enjoys travel and outdoor activities with his wife Brenda and their 20 year old daughter Meara, distance running, and community theater.
