SYLVA, FRANKLIN, BRYSON CITY – Harris Regional Hospital and Swain Community Hospital are pleased to provide comprehensive pain services across western North Carolina in Jackson, Macon, and Swain counties. Harris Pain Center, with locations in Sylva and Franklin, is now open and scheduling appointments. Swain Comprehensive Pain Services has served patients in Bryson City for more than a decade. Services provided at the Harris and Swain pain centers include diagnosis and treatment of a number of chronic conditions, including neck and back pain, headaches and migraines, fibromyalgia, cancer pain, diabetic and joint pain, arthritis, neuropathic pain, sciatica, and complex regional pain syndrome. Treatments include interventional pain procedures such as spinal cord stimulator implantation and management. Ed Lewis, MD and Leland Berkwits, MD will evaluate and treat patients, by physician referral, at all locations. Dr. Lewis has practiced interventional pain management in the region for nearly 20 years. Dr. Lewis graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston where he also completed a residency in anesthesiology. Dr. Lewis has been certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology since 1989 and by the American Board of Pain Medicine since 1995. Dr. Berkwits graduated from Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, Ill., and completed a fellowship in interventional spine and pain management at Orthopedic and Spine Specialists in York, Penn., an organization affiliated with Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Dr. Berkwits has been certified by the American board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation since 1993 and has been certified in the subspecialty of pain medicine since 2006. “We are excited to expand interventional pain services across western North Carolina with new locations in Sylva and Franklin, and our existing location in Bryson City.
