The Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP)
May 11, 2018
“Our patients deserve from us the very best health advice and I am certain, after having reviewed this data over the past few years, that lifestyle medicine (better nutrition, more exercise and stress management advice) is what we should be routinely discussing with our patients who suffer from chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease.
There are a number of barriers that prevent us from discussing this with our patients more regularly. Included on that list are not being familiar enough with the data surrounding specific benefit from living a healthier lifestyle and our own “failure” to practice what we preach. Studies have consistently shown that our own health impacts the counselling provided to patients. Doctors that use tobacco products are less likely to emphasize the risks of smoking. Doctors who exercise are more likely to provide exercise advice to their patients, and doctors who are at or near ideal weight are more likely to discuss nutrition with their patients.
I have witnessed the very powerful impact that CHIP has had on many of my patients and friends and some of my colleagues! Feel more confident discussing lifestyle medicine with your patients, feel better about your own health and recapture the joy of practicing medicine. Enroll in a CHIP program yourself and TOGETHER let’s change the healthcare environment in WNC!”
