Western Carolina Medical Society Foundation Awarded Grant Funding for Project Access® from Helen A. Powers Fund

October 2, 2019, Asheville, NC- The Western Carolina Medical Society (WCMS) Foundation based in Asheville, NC recently was awarded funding in the amount of $13,000 for its Project Access® program. The gift will assist Project Access® patients by connecting them with other organizations that can assist with food insecurity, housing, employment, transportation and interpersonal safety (social determinants of health).

The Helen A. Powers Fund provides one-year grants to organizations providing education and healthcare services to the people of Western North Carolina. Its mission is to serve the people of western North Carolina by supporting organizations committed to education and healthcare. The fund’s geographic focus is on the following Western North Carolina counties: Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Cherokee, Clay, Graham, Jackson, Haywood, Henderson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, and Yancey.

Miriam Schwarz, CEO and Executive Director of the WCMS adds, “We are honored to be the recipients of the Helen A. Powers Fund, which will be used to further the expansion of Western Carolina Medical Society Foundation's Project Access® (PA) into the region. Project Access® offers the uninsured access to the same comprehensive medical and social services as the insured population, thus preventing expensive, unnecessary emergency room use; improving quality of life for patients; and positively impacting the health of the entire community.”  Project Access® is celebrating 23 years of service to the community. The program has served over 67,000 patients totaling over $178 million in charity care.

The funders founder, Helen A. Powers who passed away in 2013, was appointed the first woman secretary of Revenue by Gov. James G. Martin in 1985 after 25 years in the banking industry where she retired as senior vice president of North Carolina Bank. Returning to Asheville following her time as Secretary of Revenue, Helen helped to reshape the financial services industry in the Carolinas.   

The Western Carolina Medical Society is the physicians’ voice, advocating for the health of the medical profession, the health of the patient, and the health of the community. The WCMS Foundation is the physician and community-led charitable arm of the medical society improving access to quality healthcare, decreasing disparities in health, and promoting health & wellness.
