Every year WCMS holds its annual Heartstrings fundraiser to help fund the WCMS Foundation. To celebrate its 13th year, Heartstrings turned up the fun with a weekend Family Fun Event.  Heartstrings, presented by Quest Diagnostics, was held on Saturday May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th at Carrier Park as part of Asheville’s popular Mountain Sports Festival.

Health Alert from BCHHS Medical Director—Varicella

We have recently seen an increase of varicella cases in schools.  I just wanted to take the time to remind everyone that although the varicella vaccine is almost 100% effective at preventing severe cases of varicella, it is not 100% effective at preventing milder cases.  Please keep Breakthrough Varicella on your list of possible diagnoses in a vaccinated child with a rash illness.

Public Health Advisory: Increasing Early Syphilis Cases in North Carolina

May 14, 2015

Early syphilis infections in North Carolina continue to rise. Compared to the same time period in 2014, early syphilis cases in the first 3 months of 2015 increased by 56%.

Due to this substantial increase in early syphilis infections, we are asking all medical providers to enhance sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention services to your patients.  New syphilis infections are primarily occurring among men, especially men who have sex with men (MSM) and HIV-positive individuals. Enhancing STI prevention services to these patients may efficiently address the rise in early syphilis infections and improve the health of our fellow North Carolinians.

CarePartners opens Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE)

April 14, 2015

CarePartners, a local nonprofit health organization and affiliate of Mission Health, has announced the opening of its PACE Center. PACE is a Medicare and Medicaid option that provides community-based care and services to people age 55 or older who otherwise might need to move to a skilled nursing facility.

Immunizations Work! The Invisible Threat Movie Screening in Buncombe County

Buncombe County has an alarming number of children who are not getting immunized based on a religious exemption. This means that parents can refuse immunizations for their children based on a non-medical reason. Buncombe County’s exemption rate is almost 5 times higher than the state average and has been climbing steadily for many years.

MAHEC Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Minority Medical Mentoring Program

The MMMP began in the fall of 2005 as a high school internship for under-represented minorities with an interest in practicing medicine. The overarching goals of MMMP is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities training and practicing in WNC, enhanced quality of care (prevention & wellness) as a result of increased workforce diversity and achieve increased levels of health parity for populations of color in WNC.
