Reducing Health Disparities
The goal of this focus area is to reduce racial and language disparities in health services. This task is accomplished through three programs:
The WCMS Interpreter Network (WIN) provides professional medical interpreters to deaf and limited English proficient patients. Funding support is sought to provide free interpreter services to low-income, uninsured patients. Click here for more information.
The Minority Medical Mentoring Program (MMMP) is an internship for under-represented minority students who have an interest in practicing medicine. By building relationships between students and our local area medical community, the hope is that the students will eventually come back to practice in western North Carolina. Currently less than 3% of the physician providers in the region are minorities. Click here for more information.
Dr. Charles Blair Health Parity Fund will provide scholarships for minority youth pursuing health careers. On-going funding is critically needed to provide the annual scholarships to our minority students pursuing careers in healthcare. Click here for more information.
