NCDHHS Sec. Cohen Issues New Guidance on Elective, Non-Urgent Surgery

May 1, 2020

NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) Secretary Mandy Cohen, MD, MPH today announced that hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers may resume elective and non-urgent surgeries in accordance with updated guidance.

"The early actions that Governor Cooper has taken and the adherence by the public to these measures, has slowed the spread of COVID-19 in our state and prevented our health care system from being
overwhelmed as we have seen in other parts of the country," Secretary Cohen stated in a letter to the health care community. "However, without a vaccine or effective treatment for COVID-19 we must remain vigilant about limiting the spread of the virus and protecting those most at risk from serious illness."

The resumption of non-urgent procedures will be phased in under the guidelines, which depend on having adequate resources including medical personnel and personal protective equipment.
