Key Observations This Week |
- |
Over the past week, COVID-19 cases have increased and key metrics have moved in the wrong direction: |
- |
- One-day increase: The highest numbers for COVID-19 cases were reported on June 6 (1,370) and June 11 (1,310)
- Percent of positive tests: NC reached 10% on June 5-6 and is among the highest in the nation
- Hospitalizations: The highest number of hospitalizations to date (812) was reported on June 11
|
Additionally, the state reported its first pediatric death associated with COVID-19 on June 1.
In response to increased community transmission, NCDHHS issued updated testing guidelines on June 9. Testing is now recommended for those with symptoms and also for asymptomatic individuals who: |
- |
- were exposed to known positive cases of COVID-19
- work in settings with a higher risk for exposure
- have recently attended mass gatherings, including protests
- are members of vulnerable and/or historically marginalized groups

Supporting Public Health and Public Protests |
- |
More than 1,200 public health professionals and community stakeholders have published an open letter in response to two ongoing public health crises: institutional racism and COVID-19. This letter includes a number of harm reduction strategies to support both protesters and public health.
This recent National Public Radio story examines the
intersection of racial disparities and COVID-19. |
