Helping the Medical Professionals of Tomorrow, Succeed Today.

WCMS proudly supports the youth of Buncombe County on their medical career journey. We offer mentorship through The MAHEC Medical Mentoring Program (MMMP) and scholarships to help them succeed through the Dr. Charles Blair Health Scholar Fund. Scholarships are awarded to graduates of the MAHEC Medical Mentoring Program (MMMP).

Honoring Dr. Charles Blair’s Legacy

On April 3, 2009, Dr. Charles Edward Blair, 54, passed away due to incurable lung cancer.

He was a compassionate healer, visionary thinker, and advocate for healthcare access. A graduate of Amherst, Alcorn State, and Meharry Medical College, he served as a U.S. Army Major and Chief of Professional Services before continuing his career in Asheville.

Dedicated to expanding healthcare access, Dr. Blair founded and led multiple community health initiatives, including the New Hope Community Health Center and the Asheville Buncombe Institute of Parity Achievement. He also co-founded Building Bridges, Rites of Passage of Asheville, and The Drum 2000.

In partnership with MAHEC, the Asheville Buncombe Institute of Parity Achievement, the Blair Family, and the Western Carolina Medical Society, this fund supports graduates of the MAHEC Medical Mentoring Program (MMMP).
